West Africa Regional Conference for Mandela Washington Fellows

Image  The West Africa Regional Conference for the 2014 Mandela Washington Fellows was held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra Ghana from the 26th-28th April, 2015.It was under the theme: Mandela Washington Fellows give back: collaborating for sustainable transformation in West Africa.

The conference brought together Mandela Washington Fellows across the West Africa Sub-region, prior to which they received a US based Leadership Development Education at various Universities across the USA as well as took up Internships in the USA and in Africa.

In their welcome address the US Ambassador to Ghana, Gene A. Cretz and Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Education, the Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa recognized the distinguished role Mandela Washington Fellows continue to play in Africa and urged them to strive to be the light Africa need to harness its full potential.

Other speakers at the conference were: Aissatou Diajhate the West Africa Regional Manager for IREX, Tony O. Elumela the founder of Tony Elumela Foundation, Nana Asantewa Afadzina the Executive Director West Africa Civil Society Institute, Dr. Patrick Awuah Founder and President Ashesi University Ghana, Amelia Carvalho YALI Alumni Coordinator US Department of State, etc.

In his closing remarks Christopher Runyan, Senior Coordinator for YALI/USAID reiterated the need for Fellows to live the mission of the Mandela Washington Fellowship by playing lead roles in promoting Africa’s Accelerated Development.
